The Book
Beyond Control book cover: a silhouetted man walking a winding path toward a setting sun over mountains and a still lake

Rock bottom was only the beginning.

John Gano is an ordinary man fighting to rebuild his life after alcoholism and a devastating divorce, determined to stay sober and honest no matter the cost. Just when happiness seems within reach—with a loving wife, a gifted son, and the life he's always dreamed of—a horrific Easter Sunday accident shatters everything. Crushed by guilt, financial ruin, and unimaginable loss, John is stripped of his home, his family, and every certainty he once held.

Trying everything to put the pieces back together, John cannot overcome his situation. With nothing left to do, he surrenders so completely that he encounters a Divine presence, defying any explanation. What follows is a profound spiritual awakening filled with mystical experiences, extraordinary states of consciousness, and life-changing encounters. Beyond Control is a true story of tragedy, redemption, and transformation that challenges everything we think we know about suffering, grace, and what lies beyond the physical world.

Who Wrote This

Two storytellers, one true account.

John Gano

Subject & Co-Author

John began his spiritual journey in 1987, and the mystical experiences that started then have continued ever since. Raised in Christianity and later initiated into Vedanta by Swami Sarvadevananda, he now moves between both traditions. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, is the father of four and grandfather of ten, and was married to his late wife, Liz, for thirty-two years. He previously self-published an early account of his experiences, The Book — It's Not Finished Yet. I'm Still Here.
